ELSS Funds Explained: Save Tax While Building Wealth

Equity Linked Savings Schemes, commonly known as ELSS funds, are mutual funds that invest predominantly in equities and qualify for a tax deduction under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, within the overall 80C limit.

What sets ELSS apart from most other 80C options is its lock-in period — currently the shortest among 80C-eligible investments — combined with the potential for equity-linked growth over the medium to long term.

Because ELSS funds invest in equities, their value fluctuates with the market, and they carry higher risk than fixed-income tax-saving instruments. They tend to suit investors who are comfortable with that volatility in exchange for the potential of equity-linked returns alongside the tax benefit.

Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks. Tax laws are also subject to change, so it's worth confirming current rules before making a decision based on tax treatment alone.
